Midhurst Grammar School Remembered

When the Grammar School was closed in December 2008, the idea of putting together a collection of memories of Midhurst Grammar School was born and I spoke about it at the reunion in Capron House last autumn. It has taken over a year to gather reminiscences and photos from former staff and students (together with the thoughts of a current student about the change), and we now have a lively collection of stories which we think you would enjoy.

The ages of our contributors ranges from 14 to over 80. There is a vivid account of life at the school during the war (and we have located one of the two holocaust refugees who came to MGS in 1939 on the Kinder Transport.) Did you take part in the 6th form strike at the time of the Cuban missile crisis? Did you ever break out of your dorm as a boarder? Do you remember walking up to Knockhundred Row for lunch in the library? You can learn how young staff coped with worldly-wise teenagers, how senior staff handled sheep who decided to come into school, and why there was a coffin hidden in the Ladies’ lavatory for a week.

Midhurst Grammar School Remembered is a 48 page anthology of articles and photographs professionally printed in colour and on quality gloss paper. We hope that it will bring pleasure to many people who have their own warm memories of MGS.

If you would like to have a copy and are in direct contact with a member of the editorial team (Edward Fischer in Easebourne, Colin Crouch in Bognor, or John and myself in Chichester), you may collect a copy from one of us for £5 or £6 by mail which includes p&p. To contact any one of  us please click here  for details on ordering by postal mail.

With many good wishes,

 Janet Newman
